Favorite Things: Cold-ass weather edition

From my last post, you may have gathered that the weather is making me a bit cranky.  Time for some favorite things to make me feel better!

1.  Apple cider.  While I usually go for tea or coffee, I've been on a cider kick lately and can't seem to go a day without at least one cup of the stuff.  I like it spiced, hot, and preferably imbibed under a quilt reading something dark and amazing like...

2. ... The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.  While Silas and Bod and the Owenses etc. are wonderful, my very favorite character is probably Liza Hempstock.  I always cry at the end.  If you haven't read it, I don't even know why I'm talking to you.

 3.  "Night-time walks."  Otto and I have been doing this thing lately where we bundle up after dinner and put our headlamps on and walk around the dark neighborhood.  We imagine that we see caves, bats, tunnels, and other spoooooky stuff just outside our lights' reach.  Instead of holing up inside, its like we're venturing out into the dark and cold and saying "we're not afraid of you!!!" 

4.  Smartwool socks.  I love any sort of wool socks, really, but these are soft cushiony tubes of "everything's-gonna-be-ok."  Folks that know me have learned that Smartwools are ALWAYS a good gift for me.  I love them and wear a pair nearly every day.

5.  Downton Abbey.  What's not to love?  British accents, class-ism, sexism, stuff and nonsense, and Dame Maggie Smith!  Love.

6.  Soup, soup, soup.  Tomato, Chicken Noodle, Minestrone...I don't really care, just give me soup!!

Having been a devoted reader for years at this point, I can safely say that I love this woman.

Takin' it to the Limit

So I got a wild hair the other day when I read somewhere that rollerskating burns like 800 calories an hour.  I remembered how much I used to love skating and decided to post on our community's Freecycle message board to see if anyone had some skates to give away.  In the fortuitous way that freecycling can sometimes be, about 20 minutes later I got an email from a person, not 8 blocks from my house saying Yes!  They had some old skates collecting dust, exactly my size.   I love them so much and am guessing they are maybe about as old as I am :-)...

And so last night found me clumsily rolling back and forth in front of my house, using my son as a balancing tool.  It was the most fun I've had in days.

Totally. All the time. Again, the look of any Wes Anderson movie is stylistically so great. I also tend to love old Hollywood style- the classics, like Audrey Hepburn. Nowadays? Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley has fantastic style...

Um...Relaxed indie-rock mom with a little thrift store chic thrown in for good measure.

There's really no way to choose just one favorite...I love Dracula by Bram Stoker, The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte...my favorite book from childhood is probably Where the Wild Things Are.

Not religiously, no. If anything, I collect books and movies- I love 70's horror films and Victorian-era science fiction. Tattoos, maybe. ( I'm up to 7...)

For reals. We are taking a 4 day weekend and driving to our hometown to visit the husband's parents for the weekend. I'm actually looking forward to the mini-road trip and the change of scenery for a couple of days.

Never Give Up! Never Surrender!

I know I've been quiet this week. There's no reason particularly, other than that I am a mom who works full time, is trying to complete an LLL leadership application and am suddenly considering graduate school? I know. I am officially, completely insane. And really, those aren't excuses anyway.

So here, for your Friday blog reading pleasure are some truly random thoughts and updates from the land of the Officially Certifiable:

1. Tweetdeck is awesome.

2. The weather here is now completely fucking with us and honestly? I can take a joke as well as the next gal but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Stop it with the fucking snow already.

3. I'm preparing a fluffy, superfluous post about style envy. Heh.

4. In the land of Otto, things are moving fast and furious. He knows SO MANY WORDS and now is able to construct small simple sentences, such as "Mama go night-night?" and "Don't like it!" and "Daddy sleeping?" He's also officially entered the stage of testing limits. He runs from us, refuses to get dressed/put on shoes/brush teeth etc. and disagrees with us as much as he possibly can. However, he is still pretty easily distract-able and there's not much he won't do for an apple slice or some outside playtime. So that's good.

He's also VERY into hugs, kisses, and tickling. As in, he tickles us with his fat little fingers while screeching "TEEEEEEEKLE! TEEEEEEEKLE!" at the top of his lungs. Its pretty adorable as long as its not four o'clock in the morning. Ahem.


Tonight I get to look forward to going out to eat for a friends birthday and then a nice quiet weekend at home, during which I will hopefully make progress on my garden and LLL pursuits. If you celebrate the holiday I hope its a good one- and if you're a heathen like myself then I hope its a good one too. Not playing favorites here. Nope.

Ok, so those who know me best may be aware of one small food preference I hold. Or, maybe its a non-preference. Anyway, without putting too fine a point on it: I HATE cilantro.

With a passion.

It is disgusting.

If something has cilantro in it I GET PHYSICALLY ILL.

Turns out, though, I'm not the only one.
